Event staffing marketplace, built for the weekend rush — case study cover

// 01the challenge

The challenge

Medley matched hospitality staff to events over WhatsApp and a shared calendar. It worked at 20 staff; at 400 it was chaos. Double-bookings, missing right-to-work documents, and a Friday-afternoon payment run that took an entire day.

Marketplaces live or die on the weekend rush — the platform had to handle hundreds of simultaneous shift claims without a single double-booking.

// 02the solution

The solution

We designed and built a two-sided platform: event companies post shifts with role, pay and location; vetted staff claim them from a mobile-first app. Concurrency-safe claiming guarantees a shift can only be filled once, however many people tap at the same moment.

Compliance is enforced structurally — staff cannot claim shifts until right-to-work and certifications are verified — and Stripe Connect automates the payment run that used to consume Fridays.

// 03the results

The results

15,000 shifts filled in the first year with zero double-bookings. Fill time for urgent shifts dropped from hours of phone calls to a median of 11 minutes. Payment admin fell from a full day a week to an automated run reviewed over coffee.
